Drew Rogers is a lifelong practitioner and promoter of the game, a simple competition between players. In his first book, Before the Spotlight, Rogers recounts how the game drew disparate athletes together, bonding them in the face of a society struggling with the early stages of the Civil Rights movement.
Rogers combines his experience as an All-State high school basketball player and Division 1 scholarship athlete with decades of pickup games plus coaching hundreds of youth players to form a gripping and insightful narrative.
Before the Spotlight is both humorous and sobering, recounting boyhood anecdotes while growing up in the sixties and the teamâs coming of age amidst the change and uncertainty of the early seventies. It is a vivid look into a complex society and a simple game.
