The Mediterranean Lifestyle

Obesity. It is an epidemic that has taken the United States by storm. In 2009 the CDC estimated that 72% of the United States population was overweight. Out of that 72% an estimated 34% were morbidly obese, and out of that 34% only an estimated 6% had an actual, genetic reason for being obese.And again, in March of 2012 the CDC chromophane which stated that 43% of the population will be obese by 2030, and yet the percentage of those with a genetic reason stays around 5%.

In other words, the other 70% who are overweight/obese or the currently 34% versus the future 43% of the population who are obese…are simply fat because they want to be. They have no genetic reason for being overweight or obese. They work out at the gym on a regular basis and eat foods labeled as “healthy” and “organic” by the FDA/USDA and yet the vast majority of the population is overweight or obese.

Here’s the thing: your body doesn’t run on exercise alone. It’s fueled by the food you consume. Weight loss, fat loss and healthy living can easily be achieved utilizing the well-known 70/30 diet plan rule, which states that perfect health and weight can be obtained by a simple 70% diet and 30% fitness routine. The vast majority of people’s problems are not related to their exercise routines, but rather the foods they eat. And, just like a high-octane engine in a performance vehicle, when you put bad fuel into the gas tank the engine starts to ping and performance falters.

In America alone more than 45 million people belong to some sort of a gym, up from 23 million people in 1993 according to an article written in Time magazine. Americans spend upwards of $20 billion a year on gym memberships. A study called the Minnesota Heart Survey – which ran from 1980 until 2000 – found that while only 47% of people said they engaged in regular exercise back in 1980, that number had grown to 57% by the year 2000. The current estimates are that closer to 65% of Americans are now going to the gym.

And yet, ironically, obesity figures have literally gone through the roof in the same period of time. The numbers are staggering, and startlingly clear: fitness has little to do with how overweight a person is. After all, numbers are up and an estimated 65% of the population is heading to the gym on a regular basis…yet roughly 75% of the population is overweight or obese.

While it’s true that our lives in the modern age have become far more sedentary than they were even 50 years ago, obesity as an epidemic did not exist until the modern age. And while it’s also true that fitness has only begun to be promoted as a healthy way of life in recent times (prior to the 1960s doctors actually advised against rigorous exercise, especially in elderly individuals who could possibly injure themselves by strenuously exercising), and there’s no doubt that the studies show a lower risk for a wide variety of diseases – especially heart-related diseases – as a result of a healthy fitness routine, the number of overweight and obese people in the world in the past few years seem to indicate that no matter how much we work out, something’s not working. After all, gym memberships are up. More people go to the gym now than they did 30, 20 and even 10 years ago. So why are people still gaining weight if they are spending so much time at the gym?

The problem? The food they are putting into their bodies. Particularly  snacks such as doughnuts and chips and power bars and muffins and cookies and and all the “fast food” that people cram into their hungry little mouths because they don’t take the time to slow down and eat healthy. They  have no actual diet plan and instead merely eat whatever is at hand that is quick and easy and doesn’t require a lot of time to prepare.

According to prominent exercise researcher Eric Ravussin of Louisiana State University, exercise for weight loss or fat loss alone is “pretty useless”, with a major factor being that while it’s true that working out burns calories and yes, you need to burn calories in order to lose weight, there is also a side effect of working out, and that is hunger. This hunger forces the body into needing to eat more to provide energy for the muscles, which can lead to weight gain if you aren’t eating the right types and quantities of food.

The real solution to the problem lies in diet and nutrition. You get out what you put in. You are what you eat.
